FULLERTON – Ryan Mango registered a pin at 125 pounds and Nick Amucastegui recorded a technical fall at 174 Friday afternoon to lead Stanford to a 29-11 Pac-10 Conference wrestling victory at Cal State Fullerton.
The Cardinal (2-1, 2-0) won seven of the 10 matches to overcome a quick start by the Titans (0-2, 0-2), who opened with a pin by heavyweight Kurt Klimek and broke a 6-6 tie when Marcus Orona scored a 10-8 overtime decision over Matt Sencenbaugh at 133 pounds.
Jordan Gray gave Stanford the lead for good at 10-9 with a 14-4 major decision at 141 over Peter Hoang. But the momentum swung after the 149-pound match.
With the match tied at 4-4 and the clock running out, Fullerton’s Nick Jordan escaped from Timmy Boone. But the move was ruled after the final buzzer and Boone went on win in overtime, 6-4. When Jordan threw his headgear in disgust, the Titans lost a team point and the score was 13-8.
The Cardinal won the next three matches to pull away to a 26-8 lead before Fullerton’s Todd Noel beat Dan Scherer, 6-2, at 184.
Most of today’s wrestlers will compete again Saturday in the Fullerton Open in Titan Gym.
