Noel Places Fifth to Pace Titans in Reno

RENO, NV - Todd Noel won five consecutive matches in the 184-pound wrestleback on his way to a fifth-place finish that paced Cal State Fullerton's performance Sunday at the Tournament of Champions in Reno.

Fullerton placed 19th out of 30 teams with Wyoming edging Boise State for the team title.

 

Noel lost his opening bout to No. 6-seeded  Aaron Norgren of Mankato State, 4-1, before his run of success in the consolation bracket.  He  decisioned Dan Scherer of Stanford, 3-0;  scored a 13-5 major decision over Troy Goodban of Cal State Bakersfield; decisioned Eric Brennan of Northern Colorado, 10-5; beat Randy Larson of Boise State, 4-3; and took a forfeit before being pinned by No. 5-seeded Jason McCroskey of Chattanooga in 3:58.  In the match for fifth place, Noel scored a 5-3 decision over Taylor Meeks of Oregon State.

 

The only other Titan to advance beyond the opening rounds was Nick Jordan at 149.  After losing his first bout, 18-6, to Jimmy Belleville of Wyoming, Jordan decisioned Rich Bushby of Liberty, 11-4;  pinned Brandon Rader of West Virginia in 4:04;   decisioned Anthony Weerheim of Montana State-Northern, 14-9, and Timmy Boone of Stanford, 3-1, before losing to Scott Clymer of Liberty, 7-5.

The Titans are idle until a Jan. 9 dual meet at Cal State Bakersfield.
