Titan Wrestling Hosts No. 3 Minnesota, Women’s Exhibition

Cal State Fullerton’s wrestling team will host a unique doubleheader Saturday evening when the Titans face the nationally No. 3 ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers in a non-conference match that will be staged simultaneously with a women’s wrestling exhibition between Simon Fraser University and Menlo College.  The action begins at 6 p.m. In Titan Gym.

Minnesota features seven ranked individuals led by two-time 125-pound All-American Zach Sanders.   He currently is ranked No. 6 in the nation.  The Golden Gophers also boast No. 2-ranked Mike Thorn at 141, No. 5-ranked Sonny Yohn at 197, No. 6-ranked Cody Yohn at 165, No. 10-ranked Scott Glasser at 174, No. 11-ranked heavyweight Tony Nelson and No. 15-ranked Kevin Steinhaus at 184.  Thorn is unbeaten in 13 matches and has won the championships of the Bison Open (where Minnesota won 9 titles) and the Kaufman-Brand Open (4 titles).

Minnesota is 4-1 in dual meets, losing only to Oklahoma State, 17-16.  The Golden Gophers will also be wrestling at 11 a.m. at Cal State Bakersfield.

Fullerton is 0-3 in dual meets, all in Pac-10 competition, and currently has no nationally ranked wrestlers.  Todd Noel at 184 has the best record at 9-3.  Kyle Bergstedt is 12-6 at 197 and Nick Jordan is 8-3 at 149.

Five women’s bouts will be contested, ranging from 44 kilograms (97 pounds) to 69 kilograms (152 pounds).  Simon Fraser is located in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, and Menlo is located in Atherton, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area.
